Read to Self

In Kindergartenwe are learning letters, letter sounds, making words and ultimately how to read.  There are two ways to read a book- read the words and picture read.  Even our readers who don't know how to read the words can still enjoy a book and be able to read it.  They're looking at the pictures and using them to creat their own original story line!

We learn how to read during our small group time with me.  I'm able to meet the students where they're at and guide them to move forward.  In order to be able to have small groups, the rest of the class will be working in centers- read to Self, listening to stories (think books on tape), word work (paper/pencil phonics work).  In order to do these centers we have to build our stamina to be able to read/work on one thing for 15 minutes straight.  This is HUGE skill and takes time to build.

We start our stamina by reading to ourselves for 1 minute.  During that 1 minutes everyone in the class needs to follow the read to self rules- stay in one spot, read/look at your books, don't talk except for a whisper read, stay focused.  It sounds easy but if we don't have all 18 on task, then we don't build our stamina.  I'm proud to say that our class has a reading stamina of 6 minutes!!
