Math Through the Day

 We incorporate math throughout our day. In the morning, we do a special number section of our morning message and calendar time. The kids need to show different ways to make the number of the day.

After lunch, we have our Math Chats. These are at the smart board. The kids take turns solving the math problems and we have a turn and talk. This is our story problem. The kids listen to the story problem and then turn to each other and try to solve it. When they share their answer they also have to explain why they think their answer is correct. Then we solve all of them together.

What's your favorite way to eat an apple?

 During our apple week, we did a fun taste test to see what was our favorite way to eat an apple.  The kids got to try apple pie, caramel apples, apples and peanut butter, apple cider, applesauce, and plain apples.  After the taste test, we graphed our favorite way and then practiced learning how to read a graph and compared answers.

Apple Taste Test

We just celebrated apple week and used the time to learn about our sense of taste. We talked about sweet, sour, spicy, and tart tastes. We learned about where different taste buds are on our tongue.  Then we got to taste Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, and Red Delicious apples and graphed our favorite.  Granny Smith apples were the class favorite.

Saint Journals

Each week we're introduced to a new Saint. We learn about their lives, interesting facts about them, and how we can be like them. We then add a drawing to our Saint journals. The kids love following the directed drawing directions and it's great to see we can hear the same directions but our pictures all look different. Many are being challenged in their art skills and are having so much fun.

Sense of Sight

We've been learning about the 5 senses. Last week, we focused on the sense of sight.  The kids tried taking an eye sight test, much like the ones they see in the doctor office. We talked about how people with low vision often use their other senses to help them navigate things. Then we tried it out, the kids were blindfolded and had to use their sense of touch and sound to open a bandaid and place it on their hand.  

The sense of touch became really important and the sense of sound helped them listen to helpful suggestions from friends.
