Teacher of the Week

Our class was on the news!!  I was recently nominated as Channel 13 WREX's teacher of the week by Nathan and his family!  I am extremely honored and feel overwhelmed.  Thank you to all of my students and families for their continued support.  I love teaching and want all of my students to  love school and learning, stay excited about education, feel loved, appreciated, and leave first grade ready for the next level. You can see the class's and my honor at:  WREX

Tasty Fractions

We started the 2nd half of our math unit- Fractions!  We have been learning about 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4.  The kids have learned that the bottom number of a fraction tells us how many equal parts there are.  The top number of the fraction tells us how many parts are used.  We used rice crispy treats to practice making fractions!  We used plastic knives to make thirds, halves, and fourths!  The best part was turning our fourths into thirds by eating a piece.  Then turning our thirds into halves, by eating a piece.  Then turning our halves in to one whole!

Special Guest

All year we've been working on a World Geography unit!  We have learned about our country and 50 states as well as many countries throughout the world.  We started the year with our 50 State Postcard Project.  We asked family and friends to mail a postcard from each of the 50 states to us.  As they arrived, we mapped them and discussed the state.  Soon we started receiving postcards from other countries.  As they arrived, we found the country on our globe and discussed the country.  During December, we traveled around the world to see how Christmas was celebrated in 10 other countries.

Fortunately, Arianna's Uncle Alex came to visit us a couple of weeks ago.  He lives an exciting life of travel.  Alex has worked in several countries and came to our room to share his knowledge.  We were able to learn about his most recent trips, saw money from a variety of other countries, pictures and postcards.  He was kind enough to entertain our variety of questions as well!  The kids loved the surprise guest and Arianna was so proud to be able to introduce and share her Uncle Alex with us.

Geometry Fun

We've been working on Geometry in math for the last couple of weeks.  The kids LOVE playing with our shapes to create new shapes.  We're learning about 2D- Plane Shapes and 3D- Solid Figures.  The rectangular prism and Triangular Prism trick us sometimes!
